Key West, Florida

There are 42 bridges to cross to get all the way to Key West.  We crossed them all.  Although Key West is not considered RV friendly - mostly because the roads are narrow and land is in short supply - the Navy is VERY RV-friendly and we found a wonderful spot to park at Trumbo Point Annex near the Coast Guard Station, although without hookups.  We enjoyed watching all the boats that used the channel right in front of us.   We had thought to stay four or five days and ended up staying twelve.   Everyone was as very friendly.  The neighbors quickly brought us up to speed as to how things worked and where to go and what to do.  Bill and Amy, who are from New Jersey, spend their winters in Key West, so they had been there for almost two months.  They mentioned how much they enjoyed visiting North Dakota and had even been to Jamestown and had a great time there.

There was so much to see in Key West, starting with the Trolley Tour that gave us an idea of what to go back to see.    Every evening tourists and locals alike gather for a sunset celebration at Mallory Square.  Then Duval Street is packed with folks looking for a place to eat or party.   And are there ever some interesting characters there.  Besides all the military RVers that flock there, a large contingent of Harly riders cruised into Key West while we there, followed by spring breakers.  Key West shifted gears to accommodate each group.

Friends from Corpus Christi and now Stockton (near hometown of Lodi) know the owner of the Curry Mansion in Key West and we went to say hello.  In 1976 Al and Edith Amsterdam bought the mansion and restored it and it is now a beautiful bed and breakfast.

One highlight for us was to take the Hilton's ferry out to Sunset Key for lunch at their restaurant there.  The only way to reach the island is by boat.   There are beautiful guest houses there as well.

What a small world!!  One afternoon we were relaxing at the recreation center at the Truman Annex where there are modem connections when a young Army Major tapped me on the arm and said, "I think I know you."  He was none other than Vicki's high school and college sweetheart about 18 years ago and he was in Key West for 3 or 4 days for a conference.
