Adjacent to the WIT rally grounds is a
heritage center manned by volunteers. It was open for visitors one
weekend, with several little museums, lots of tractors, entertainment,
and more food. Our MILWIT guys and gals did the opening and
closing flag ceremonies for GNR and they did their usual fine job.
Dave Price, weatherman for the CBS Early Show did his four segments from
the rally grounds one morning, very early. Now that we have
watched the behind the scenes activities, we will never look at those
shows in quite the same way. Dave was very personable and
remarkably witty for so early in the morning. We had hoped our
MILWIT group would be more visible, but the segments were short.
Dolly was threatening the Texas coast and required more attention.
The State Row parties were a lot of fun.
Each group provided something to eat, ice cream, sno cones, hot dogs,
or, in the case of the Louisiana group, jambolaya. We made the
rounds, meeting folks from Canada, and checking out the California and
Texas groups to see if we might know anyone. A Classic Car parade
of more than two hundred cars brought back lots of memories from more
than fifty years ago. Bobby Vee entertained one night. He
was the North Dakota boy who stepped up to fill in for the Big Bopper
after the plane crash. This year Winnebago celebrated its 50th
anniversary and the Fifties was the theme of the rally.
