Terry really did not expect to find much new
material on Dr. James Ball Naylor, but she did! What a successful month we have had in Ohio.
Thanks to Sara at the Morgan County Herald, whom we met last time, we
found a four-site campground in McConnelsville, across the river from
Malta, the hometown of Naylor. We drove a few miles
south to Stockport and had dinner at the now remodeled Stockport Mill Inn
where we saw a wonderful book on Stockport's early history. The
owner called later to tell us where we could buy one - from Hank, the
97-year-old uncle of the author. Later, in the course of our
research, we met one of their daughters who just happens to be the county
recorder! A few days later a friend from Columbus who is from this
area and a collector of Naylor books came to see us. We took him out
to meet Hank and Mary and discovered that he knew Jim's father. What
a treat to listen. The highlight of our stay was an invitation to
visit Elmhurst, the old Victorian home that Naylor owned a
century ago. Greg and Ellen, the current owners, have done a
fantastic job of restoring the place, yet making it livable. Greg also had come into possession of scrapbooks
from a Naylor family friend that he let us copy. What a find!
