Soldotna & Kenai, Alaska

July 2006

Soldotna is the central hub of the Kenai Peninsula.  The world famous Kenai River is one of its big attractions, where you can fish from the bank, or a fish walk, or from a boat.  King, silver, red and pink salmon, rainbow, steelhead, lake trout, Dolly Varden (where did they get that name?!) and other species are abundant in the river and nearby lakes.  The sockeye (red) salmon were running, but the powers that be held fishermen off until our last day.  But we did get to watch the fishermen reeling them in like crazy.  We visited the local museum, took in a dinner show (halibut was scrumptious) where we listened to Hobo Jim, Alaska's official balladeer.  The town of Kenai is only 10 or 12 miles away and we did the walking tour and enjoyed the view of the mountains in the distance.
