Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada

July 2005

There is the town of Lake Louise and then there is the lake that is Lake Louise.  Our first view of the lake was absolutely breathtaking, with its backdrop of glaciers and mountains.  The glaciers grind the rock beneath them into a fine powder called rock flour.  Meltwaters wash this powder into the lake.  The resultant silty water absorbs all colors of incoming light - except the striking turquoise that reflects back to our eyes.
