Spearfish, South Dakota

July 2004

Spearfish reminds me a bit of Roseburg, Oregon.  It is nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains.  We took the scenic Spearfish Canyon Drive and it was fabulous.  The big draw is the Black Hills Passion Play.  Gerry saw it when he was a boy and still remembers it well.  The production we saw was well worth the time and money; however, it was much different than Gerry remembers.  It is much more polished with much more elaborate sets, but still as touching as ever.  It sprinkled a little bit during the play, but not enough to stop it.  Then a huge, dazzling rainbow appeared behind the set.  The timing was awesome!  Unfortunately, no cameras were allowed during the production.
