Key West, Florida

2004

Last year we decided that this is one of our favorite places - and we still think so.  Our big adventure this time was to try parasailing.  What a thrill!  And it was so easy.  After putting on a life vest and the harness and hooking up, the rope gently lifts you into the air.  Those of us who were brave enough could have our feet dipped in the water at the halfway point.  When the ride was over and we were pulled in close to the boat, we just stepped gently down and we were through.  The vista from 400 feet above the water (and 600 feet behind the boat) was incredible.

We also did the usual tourist things - like visit the Southernmost Point on the Island (90 miles from Cuba), checked out the Butterfly Conservatory, did a little shopping and even played some golf.  We also stopped in at the Curry Mansion Bed & Breakfast to say hello to Edith, whom we met last year.

From where we were parked near the tarmac at Trumbo Point, we watched some special operations training in action.  Several groups were loaded on helicopters nearby and dropped into the water off shore.  Unfortunately, one young man was lost during the operation - reminding us just how serious the training is.  (His body was recovered a day or so later.)

Surprisingly, meals were not the highlight of our trip.  We did make another trip, via ferry, to Sunset Key for a wonderful brunch at Latitudes - and of course we enjoyed lots of spectacular Key West sunsets.
