Hawkeye, lowa

May 2004

Vicki joined us in the RV for a quick trip to Hawkeye, Iowa, where Gerry's father was born in 1890.  Terry even gave up her front seat so Vicki could enjoy the view.  Our first stop was in Fayette to meet Dale and Gerrie Roberts, who are the current coordinators for the Annual Roberts Family Reunions, held for the last 75 years.  They had a wealth of information that they willingly shared.  Gerry's grandmother (on his Dad's side) was Mary Elizabeth Roberts.  Members of the Flaherty family often attended the reunions in earlier years.  We copied newspaper clippings from several years.  Dale & Gerrie have a number of albums with genealogy information and pictures and other newspaper articles.

The closest campground we could find was in Waucoma, which happens to be where Gerry's grandparents are buried.  We drove all through Hawkeye, Iowa, which was larger than we had thought.  At the local historical museum we even found a page for Jerry Flaherty in the 1905 medical records of Dr. Walsh.  As long as Vicki can find a phone line, she can get some work done.  In Waucoma, the lady who owned the campground also owns the local bar & grille.  Vicki was able to plug in and set up shop first thing in the morning and she even managed to sneak in a run as well.  What a pleasure to have this time with her.
