2002 Fort Davis was a key post in defending west Texas from 1854 until 1891. It is one of the best remaining examples of a frontier military post. Troops of "Buffalo Soldiers", black infantrymen, were stationed at the fort. Male docents in period uniforms provided interesting and colorful anecdotes. No pictures could be taken from inside the restored buildings, so I can't share any with you of those. The only picture I took illustrates one of the interesting anecdotes we were told. When the fort was being built, German stone masons were paid two dollars a day to cut and build the houses. When the bills were sent to Washington before completion, someone decided to save the government money. Since the enlisted solders were only making fourteen cents a day, they were charged with finishing the buildings. You can probably tell which portion of the building shown was done by the stone masons and the portion done by the enlisted solders. |
