Front Royal, Virginia

2003

One reason for stopping in Front Royal was because there is a 5-Star Coast to Coast campground there and it seemed like a good place to relax a little and maybe get well again.  The pictures show why the park is so highly rated.  From here we were able to drive through some back roads over to Winchester, Virginia where our friends, Pat and George Baldwin, spend the summer.  We visited them in Cedar Key, Florida earlier this year.  Unfortunately, it was raining much of the time that we were in the area.  But it is too beautiful not to get out and enjoy anyway.

I was surprised to see a crazy quilt hanging on their wall.  I have one that my grandmother made and had seen another when we were in Ruidosa, New Mexico.

Although it was overcast, we did drive up Skyline Drive, overlooking the Shenandoah Valley.  It was so beautiful and peaceful; not many other vehicles on the road because of fog.

There are several large caverns in the area.  We chose to visit the Luray Caverns.  One unusual feature is an organ that is connected to different structures in the caves with hammers that strike the appropriate notes.  We were treated to a short recital at the end of the tour.

We also had a chance to play golf with Mike Dallam, whom we met in Jacksonville, Florida.  He arranged a tee time for the two guys, but when Willomena couldn't get away to go shopping with me, I joined them for the first 9 holes - even got to drive my own cart (such fun!).

Willomena did meet us for dinner in Warrenton and we went with them to a local street fair to listen to a few jazz bands and people-watch.
